I can’t stop crying having just finished the book. It’s an incredible piece of literary genius. Thank you for telling us this unimaginable story of heartbreak and redemption. It just seems so mind blowingly impossible that there could be even a spec of truth to this. Monstrous doesn’t even begin to describe the horrors this woman endured. I actually had to stop at times and take a break I was so emotionally upset. Tears just flowed. It amazes me the horrible unspeakable things man can do in the name of science. I thank God those institutions are gone if not they should be burned to the ground. It enrages me that she spent over forty some years institutionalized!! Even clergy and Nuns were complicit in her torture. Sister Cummings made my stomach turn, with each chapter I developed a deep hatred of her character. My mother grew up raised by nuns during the depression and the stories she told were no less monstrous of the treatment she received at their hands. My mother’s back was forever crippled because of it. She endured many surgeries trying to relieve the pain from it.But she too overcame her childhood torture even inviting the nun to dinner many times to our home. “Nora” and my mother are better persons than myself I never forgave that nun for what she did to my precious mother. You always wonder if circumstances had been different what potential Nora would’ve had in life. So much lost.I loved her story has been told she deserved it to be told!!!How she never completely lost her mind is unfathomable.I pray that anywhere people are held incarcerated or institutionalized that they are receiving humane treatment.Because anything less is criminal. I loved this book, I read 125 books a year and this is the best I have read. Davies make the characters come alive and I felt so many emotions. I read it in a day. I'm a retired nurse so I loved the ability to see what state hospital were like years ago and how cruelly many of the patients were treated and the Arcacic procedures done to help people. For a girl to get put in state hospital for being pregnant and unmarried was crazy to me. Noras parents put her there when she was 17. This book will stay with me a long time and it shows the helper is helped too..
